What is Bextra?

Bextra is an anti-inflammatory drug. Specifically, it is in a class of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Other common NSAIDs include aspirin and ibuprofen.

The U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved Bextra in 2001 to reduce inflammation and pain related to arthritis and menstrual cramps. However, due to the many harmful side effects associated with the drug, Pfizer voluntarily pulled Bextra off the market just four years later. The FDA has since warned consumers regarding the dangers of the drug.

Increased Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke

A 2004 study showed that patients who took Bextra following heart bypass surgery were more than twice as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke. This statistic was compared with those who took placebo pills, but other NSAIDs presented much lower risks for these high-risk patients, proving Bextra more dangerous.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome

The use of Bextra has also been linked to a rare skin disorder known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. This inflammatory disorder can lead to serious concerns such as long-term vision impairment, total vision loss, and even death. The condition is fatal for up to 15 percent of patients.

Widespread Consequences

It has been established that Bextra was also sold off-label and misbranded because Pfizer intended to defraud or mislead healthcare providers and their patients. As a result, more patients are at risk of serious side effects because of the dishonest and negligent acts of others. Drug companies that commit these serious crimes against consumers must be held liable for their actions. Tawwater Law Firm, PLLC can help you fight Pfizer for your right to compensation.
